What Should I Get Her?

From: Donna Kozik

When one of my younger cousins was getting married I wanted to create something special for her wedding gift, one that she would find both practical and treasure for years to come.

I settled on creating “Our Family Cookbook,” where I collected, organized and put all of the family recipes my cousins, sister and I grew up with in one book for everyone to enjoy. I went through my mom’s recipe box and wrote my cousins and aunt for their contributions, and included a few from my sister and some close friends, too.

I was thrilled with the results and decided to get more copies made to give as Christmas gifts for the women and cooks in my family.

There was a “gift within the gift,” too.

I added stories about the food and fun times my cousins, sister and I had growing up in northwestern Pennsylvania. Many of them centered on the gatherings we had at our grandparent’s house in Corry—from the special “bukie” rolls my “Bushie” made to the appetizer platter Dad loaded with fresh veggies from our garden.

Here’s an example of a page from my cookbook:

I realized that I had created more than a cookbook—I made a special family keepsake!

I discovered a lot while creating this book—from how to organize recipes, the proper way to list ingredients, give directions and a whole lot more. I researched the options for formatting and publishing the book from the online resources available (there are a lot out there!). I even tried a few of these services myself to see exactly how they worked.

The bride loved it so much I decided to give all my family members their own copies for Christmas. Since “Bushie,” “Dziadzia” and my parents and are gone, I was especially pleased to capture the recipes from when I was a kid. In a way, they live on through these “food memories” every time one of their recipes is served up—and are part of a personal and treasured book.

It was a great gift, fun to do and inexpensive to create. Now, with “My Cookbook Project,” I’ve brought together all that I learned in my cookbook project so you can do the same for yourself.

I hope you take the plunge and get started today—it really is a lot of fun to do and creates a memory that will last a lifetime.

My best,

More Do’s and Don’ts for
Creating Your Own Cookbook

I picked up these tips while creating my own cookbook—use them for yourself!

DO read cookbooks. It will get you in the flow of writing one and let you pick up ideas for your own.

DO notice how recipes are laid out and how the directions are done.

DO keep it simple to start. You can always add more recipes, images, and captions later.

DON’T do it alone. Unless this is a fun surprise, it’s a case of “the more cooks the better!”

DO categorize your recipes by type of dish (main dishes, desserts) or holiday.

DON’T start formatting too soon—it will frustrate you.

DO include stories and family facts—it adds a personal touch!

DON’T keep putting it off—collect and capture the recipes in your own cookbook before it’s too late!

Isn’t it time you turned your
